In my ongoing research into dog rescue groups, I have discovered an alarming change that some groups are making to their adoption contracts. In many locations, animal control agencies bring animals to the shelters. In the case of pet store puppies that answer is often a puppy mill, where dogs live crowded together in cages and never get to romp on green grass or see the fresh air. These “meet and greet” sessions are intended to introduce the dogs and the organization to prospective owners and volunteers, raising awareness and encouraging owners to spay and neuter their own pets.

The ultimate goal of any of these shelters is to find a permanent home for the animals, whether that means returning them to their previous home or finding new adoptive owners.
