Bringing a pet into your home is a wonderful experience and there are many ways to do this. Try to see the dog at least a couple of times before deciding to adopt him, and take him for a walk on the lead if possible to see how he walks and how he responds to you on a one-to-one basis. It is not possible for many children to have pets specially a dog or a cat.
Owning pets is bliss for they are your source of unconditional love, contagious enthusiasm and total acceptance. Many shelters have a very easy or no screening process, and will let you take home whatever pet you want the same day. Dogs live 10-15 years or more and adopting a dog is a long-term commitment that you should take very seriously.
I went to the shelter today to get know the scared dog in I-14, who is on the list to be euthanized tomorrow morning, and I left the memory card for my camera at home. The problem is that many shelter dogs offered for adoption have serious psychological or other bad dog behavior problems, and even medical problems, which the frequently scanty screening methods did not detect or report.
